Week 4: Analysis and reflection

This week was the week we edited our class exercise and turn it into something that had a little more thought put into it. Unlike most exercises this one was more flexible, not done under the constraint of a static camera and single take scenes. This was also done for the last exercise about the french man Leon seducing a girl who had something in her eye. Anyway.

I didn’t go to the shoot on Friday, I woke up really late and Received a text an hour into the class that said “are you coming to class today?!?”. I let my team mates down I think, So after that it was interesting to watch something I had helped create yet not take part in. It was like giving birth to an idea but never actually doing it. so they took it upon themselves to use what we discussed about in class.

The final product that I coughed up was not exactly a masterpiece or even noteworthy, It felt like the shots were specifically made to fit things and flow a certain way. And also it felt like the 180 Degree line was sort of broken too, noticeably. I remember the Antonioni example Paul gave in class, he continuously and relentlessly broke the 180 rule but it was still passable, actually magnificent. We know more of the space rather than get lost int eh dimensions. I try to do it too, but I tried and fail. Perhaps its the editing suites and i know too well where each corner leads and i’m just very critical of reality and space.

Epiphanies:

To be honest, they were not as I intended to be, but I obviously was not there and I could not asses the reality of the situation and how hard it probably was. On a lighter note, the team got the gist of what I was trying to portray on screen. and because they had an extra limb, that is to be able to move the camera and do tracking shots. It’s a whole new dynamic to the shots. And left my initial idea of having a tremendous sense of space and stillness but life within the frame. but it was nice for what it was, the camera work could have been more intricate or at least tight. i felt like each time I form, I always stick with Jason and he insists on being camera person without even listening to other group mates. he is entitled to his own interpretations and input but he does it in a way where he just doesn’t seem to take note of the initial idea. It’s a reminder for myself too, i should always have open ears and never force an idea that no one really agrees with or sees the same way. So it was a good idea to rotate roles after each shot. Good Call, Paul.
