In this clip from Forbidden Lies, Anna Broinowski’s 2007 film: describe in detail all of the audio, how it may have been recorded/sourced and how you think it has been edited / layered in post.
The majority of interviews use a sort of comedic piece of audio that is made to ridicule the author of the false book. It is the sort of music one would hear in traveling television programs, it is fast paced and it sounds Middle Eastern to fit the context. And the fact that Rana Husseini the presenter and pioneering female journalist is going one place to another asking questions and it also helps with the cut scenes too. It is about national pride and defending honor and what not, but the audio used is made to juxtapose the context. There were also a couple of soundscapes and sound effects to enhance the story telling. A couple of examples would include the dramatic/intense noise that appears when Rana is talking about Egypt’s location. Sound effects were used effectively in the first sequence, where the song ends and Rana interrupts the singing. There was a scratching sound and as that came up the image of the woman walking also vanishes into sand and disperses into the desert. Without the sound of the wind in the song, it wouldn’t have been so dramatic. The whole point of the recreation was to exaggerate it and make it seem ridiculous. For instance, when Norma khouri’s actor throws away her scarf into the air, it drops heavily on the leaves of the ground and it is something to be reckoned with. The shot goes on for a couple of seconds as they drive away. It is all very artistic and again it is to dramatize and almost trick viewers into being so compelled to these two characters we see.
