PROJECT BRIEF 2 – WEEK 4

The dynamic of our group has been flowing really nicely, we’re able to work efficiently together and more importantly able to discuss and bounce creative ideas off each other. This was evident when we all sat down to edit our PB2. We were able to discuss what worked and didn’t when deciding how to piece all of the different shots together. Everyone had the space for input and and we all took on board everyone’s ideas to incorporate them into the film.

The original plan was to film a variation of different shots of a collection of hats and glasses in the botanical gardens. However, at the exact time we planned to shoot, a large storm tried to rain on our parade, but with a bit of spontaneity and a hint of crazy we decided to drastically change our plan and literally dance in the rain. Even though there was such a sudden change in plans we all worked really quickly to be able to get the footage that we did. As soon as we had the idea we rolled with. In doing this it actually worked out in our favour, allowing us to dip our toes into something a little bit more experimental and perhaps create something a little more interesting than we initially planned.

As the concept of wearing a roast chicken hat in the rain is quite bizarre, we wanted to cut and edit the shots to represent this. As we used to watch movies on VHS we decided to add a VHS filter over the footage to give a sense of delving back to our childhood. We were hoping to bring childhood imagination to life with this technique. I think that we achieved this with the silliness of the shots and dancing in the rain with a chicken hat on. Enhancing the playful aesthetic we were going for.

Another technique we used that I think works well and adds more depth to the film was the layering of music. We sat outside and recorded the ambiance of the city getting sounds of the pedestrian crossing and trams as they passed. We put this over the top of  soundtrack that complimented this and then added  a sound clipping of rain. I felt like this gave an extra element to the film to make you feel like you were there with me in the environment. We tried to choose music that would fit well with the short cuts and reverse effects we had, in attempt to make quite a simple idea into something more pleasing to all the senses.

Overall I’m happy with our final result of PB2 even though none of our original ideas went to plan. It was a great learning curb and showed that when we are put in hot water (or in this case a storm) we grow stronger and work together as a team creating a piece that I think we can all be pleased with.
