Networked Media: Affordances

Hi there,

This week’s reading was the kind of reading that I didn’t expect to enjoy, but actually did. Don Norman’s style is engaging and provocative in the sense that he pushes you to give thought into what he’s relaying. Specifically, he describes the concept of ‘affordances’. According to Norman, Affordances are the capacities of an object to its users i.e. its functions. Norman argues that affordances need to be visible in order for user engagement. He, also, mentions the four types of constraints: logical, cultural, semantic, and physical. Overall, he aimed to raise recognition for the lack of attention paid by the maker to the user. Something that we all experience, but never really think about. However, I am thinking about this vital concept now, and as a potential content creator/designer, I will base my creation upon this important foundation! To further imprint this idea, Elaine made us discuss the design of her bottle..that very much looks like a jar. I,personally, started referring to it as a ‘jottle’. The analysis of her jottle managed to successfully get the notion of affordances across. Can’t wait for next week’s class!

Cheers

NEWS IS A JOKE: Assignment 1a

Hi there!
My first session in “The News is a joke” studio was like what I expected in some ways and what I didn’t expect in others. It included multiple screenings of famous Youtube News Comedy videos, so as to set the tone of the class and help us aim towards a certain standard of delivering News Comedy segments. Stephen Colbert and John Oliver are considered the best in this field of work and I aspire to be as charismatic as they are in delivering information to the public, while making them laugh! This, also, shows that these shows are heavily dependent on the host’s personality. Personally, that provided a much needed insight into the substance of this studio as I was somewhat ignorant to the mechanism of such shows. The famous ‘talk-to-the-people-sitting-next-to-you-and-discuss-the-prompt’ technique, though awkward, aided in exposing me to further information and eye-opening ideas regarding the increasing availability of ‘News’ to the public and the way they’re consumed. Back to where I come from, people tend to avoid news as a whole, because they’re found to be depressing. So, a comedic, light-hearted approach to them is REVOLUTIONARY. Consequently, news will be shared, rather than being avoided like the plague! Moreover, this increases public awareness and knowledge, and that empowers nations into overcoming life-altering issues that they were merely unknown to them. All in all, this is what drove me into choosing this studio and this is what will drive me into succeeding in it.

NEWS IS A JOKE : Assignment 1b

Hi there!

Prior to my arrival in Australia, I have been told to be cautious as Australians are extremely racist and islamophobic. So far, I haven’t been attacked or exposed to discrimination. I was glad about that and felt pretty safe. Until, I came across this online article by Independent Australia with the title “Racist dog whistling over African Gangs proves Turnbull is a hollow man”*. The article is criticizing Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull due to his racist comment regarding terrorism by “African crime gangs” in Melbourne. If there was proof that there is some terrorizing happening by gangs, I would be completely supportive, but when he was asked for evidence, his response was as follows: “I’ve heard people, colleagues from Melbourne, say there is real anxiety about crime in Melbourne.” * He made a public announcement that could put innocent people in a vulnerable place, because he heard something from a friend of a friend!! It’s terrifying that a man of such rank and influence could encourage people to hate on each other. Even more so, is the fact that its 2018 and racism is still a thing. Hence, by making this a story that can be told and shared, we could unify and break the hard shell of racism.

Networked Media: Week 1

Hi there!

My name’s Anhar and I’m a Media student. This is my first ever blog! Honestly, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of “blogging”. I was like “ughh..can we not?”, but then again that was my initial attitude towards “vlogging” as well, which I’ve come to like later on. To begin with, this week’s reading was different in its simplicity and format. There wasn’t much struggle to understand the writer’s points. Moreover, having the writer talking from experience makes his argument more reliable. Not to forget the discussion we had with Elaine, which was quite insightful! Overall, I’m excited for this course as a whole, and I look forward for what’s to come!

Cheers!
