A4 Week 10 Reflection

After receiving some incredibly helpful feedback from professional comedians Stayci and Hannah, the once Tiny Chairs crew, now Milk Run crew, have ruled out what doesn’t work for our project and amped up what does. Our final draft is looking strong after going over the feedback and making some important revisions, and we’re set to begin filming on Monday.

Stayci and Hannah noted that our presentation felt very different to our script, and that the comps we were pitching were all varied, making it difficult to envision the world and characters. I agreed that our inspirations were a bit all over the place, as we all seemed to have different visions for the style and structure of the film/pilot episode, and tried throwing everything into a slide. We pitched a coming-of-age hybridised with comedy, and delivered what felt more like a Frankenstein-esque dark comedy. As Sam said after receiving feedback from our presentation, our film stopped being a coming-of-age when we introduced a cadaver into the script. Rather than pitching our film as something it’s not, we agreed to embrace the weirdness we’ve brought together and heighten what worked the most, ditching the “understated” approach and heightening our comic characters and situations through repetition and benign violation.

Our main characters have been cast and some of the crew will be making an appearance in the film. Daniel has generously bought props for our character Charlie, and we’re in the process of organising equipment and transportation. We’ll start production on Monday with a garden shoot and on-street filming in Fitzroy, and have discussed doing a few takes of specific dialogue as we were unsure if certain lines would work. It feels a little strange reaching this stage and starting production, but I’m excited to see how it goes and what becomes of it.
