A4 Week 8 Reflection

OUTLINE

This week, my group’s plan for the major project has slowly evolved through pitching and further ideation. The ideas we pitched to the class were quite vague, so understandably other groups didn’t have much to offer in terms of inspiration, but the main feedback we received was to narrow down our idea. Through anecdotes and media inspiration, we’ve conceptualised a standalone episode of a drama comedy show, which follows a frazzled media student in a share house situation with a medicine student.

With a plan to create a character driven project, we began with a character outline to get a sense of our protagonist and their relationship to their housemate. We also put together an idea for an opening, which a few of us did by bouncing off each other’s ideas for particular shots and character lines. I’ll be attempting a vomit draft with what we’ve compiled in the project outline, which I’ll revisit with the group. Our plan is to write a drama heavy script and plug jokes in where appropriate, but we also hope that the humour will come organically from the situation at play.

Themes and phrases we kept returning to, which will be helpful in the scriptwriting process, is classism and elitism in Melbourne, poorcore, ‘when in Rome,’ communication barriers, tiny furniture in cafes, and seemingly absurd standards in the CBD and surrounding suburbs for newcomers. Despite still being in the early stages of pre-production, I think that giving ourselves time to flesh out our world and characters will be beneficial in the long run.
