Media: Week 3 Update

Media: Week 3 Update

We were lucky enough to start this week with a masterclass from screen-writer;Robyn Winslow. As producers, it was really interesting to see the process a screenwriter goes through to create the final script that we end up shooting. Robyn took as through 3 drafts of one of her feature scripts and discussed the reasoning behind the changes she made in each version.

Robyn was surprisingly open to the idea of creating multiple drafts in order to envision a version of her work that will be perfect for the screen. Unlike many writers, her willingness to edit and better her scripts was commendable, and we all learnt a lot about how to take criticism in a positive light and ultimately utilise comments. The session was extremely useful to us media students as we are now able to empathise with the creative writing students as they write our series’ scripts, but also have a greater understanding as to how scripts are organised and the different elements which go into them.

On Wednesday Jeremy greeted us and we awaited the entrance of the creative writing groups to announce their highly anticipated pitches. The writers entered and one of the students discussed the process of selecting the final five pitches.

One by one the groups pitched their ideas as the media students listened intently and weighed their options. The working titles of the different projects included:

  • Cleaned up.
  • Get Hexed!
  • Jeff and James Quality Fun Times.
  • Shriekers!
  • Tits Up!

Each of the pitches were different and involved unique elements which made the selection diverse and exciting to listen to. From witches to emotionally unstable children’s TV presenters. We all had a laugh listening to what the groups had developed in their classes

All the media students sent in their preferences via. email and were able to move around to discuss the ideas with the creative writers, as Jeremy tallied the votes. I was lucky enough to get into the ”

I was lucky enough to get into the “Shriekers!” group which included 4 creative writers and 4 media students, it was really nice getting to know my group and discussing ideas.
