Over Sharing on Social Media
So we’ve all had those moments where we’ve been angry about something, and we’ve made a status, a post maybe, or we’ve reblogged something we shouldn’t have.
I guess I’m a big culprit when it comes to this.
It seems like whenever I’m angry I have to indulge in it somehow; and apparently the only way to do that is to tell everybody, everything I am feeling.
I feel like this phenomenon is apparent in exclusively within the younger generations, especially teens and young adults. People who have grown up alongside the internet, and have always had that medium there for them as a comfort.
Though I feel like some of the older generations do this in different ways. I mean, my racist aunt posts ALOT of stuff on Facebook that she shouldn’t. But I don’t think she really cares. As long as people feel her emotions, see her point, and know how she feels. Why should she care?
Well, I think everyone should care.
I think posting anything on the internet upon impulse is always going to be bad news. You don’t know who that information is going to spread to, or where it will follow you. Since media is instant, notifiable, and permanent; it’s going to be pretty hard to get rid of anything you put up on Facebook or Tumblr.
So why do we want people to know what we’re feeling?
I actually don’t know. It might be a cry for help, or maybe it’s just too easy these days to do so. I mean 30 years ago it would be pretty hard to let everyone at your school know that you’re mad about your results on the maths test. But now, you can basically let the entire world know whenever you want, wherever you want.
