It’s occurred to me recently that there are literally millions of remix/mash up videos that people have put on YouTube over the years. I think I’ve probably seen dozens of them myself and there is the odd one that goes viral and everyone sees. They are super common and usually done just for laughs. A lot of them are poor quality, but some of them are absolute gems. The video below is one of my favourite remixes, partly because I like Adventure Time but mainly because it’s so simple and so effective. The creator has cleverly noticed the similarities between the melodies of the adventure time song and Alicia Keys’s New York. Simply by combining the two videos and changing their context, the creator has turned a very popular heartfelt song into a joke song. I think it highlights how much something can be changed by changing it’s context.
