3 The initiative post – This post is for you to research and write on anything related to the aims of the course. You could do some shooting and editing, then upload it to your blog and reflect upon it. Anything…. (minimum 500 words)
There are many things that can inspire someone like me who studies in this course, for instance movies, series on Netflix and all other kinds of media we consume every day, one of which is the YouTube platform.
On YouTube there are a lot of independent creators who sometimes are able to make wonderful pieces of media having to face restrictions such as time and sometimes budget related.
A channel I follow regularly, and which most importantly inspires me and my work, is an Italian channel called Quei Due Sul Server (QDSS for short). The channel was opened from two guys who are friends since childhood and have worked together for years, in fact, they didn’t start their career as YouTube makers, but before they decided to produce videos on the platform, they would mostly create TV spots for regional broadcasters and make videos and photoshoots for weddings. They started their YouTube career with a channel mainly focused on gaming where they would review and talk about all kind of games, their popularity started growing fast since they distinguished themselves thanks to a higher production value then the rest of the Italian YouTube and their original and fun content. Through out the years though, they opened even more channels where the focus was not gaming anymore, but where they started to make more professional and creative videos. They started making music, a web series, comedy shorts and started making a tour in Italy with a stand-up comedy show in theatres all around the country until just recently they published a comic book made all by themselves as most of the things they produce.
Since their subscription to YouTube they did and tried arguably everything there is to do, stop motion, animations and ASMR included. What I find inspiring by them is how they actually just started from being kids with a camera and doing little jobs for small companies and thanks to their creativity and determination they were able to become one of the biggest channels in Italy and have success in various fields of entertainment and media production making whatever they felt like and challenging their selves. This is something I am really intrigued to do to and that is one of the reasons why I chose this class so that I can also try out for myself a various of different situations where I will have to adapt and overcome obstacles to make something good.
2- Reflect on the findings from class exercises and homework (choose 2) and embed the videos in your blog post.
All the exercises we did up until now during the past classes we participated in, were all helpful for making us train on our editing and directing. The examples I wasn’t to talk about in this reflection are the first ever video we had to make for this class, were we were asked to make a simple video with how many shots we wanted and portraying a simple everyday action, and the latest small thing which was a group project were we were given a scrip we had to follow and film.
The first video I made is not something I am very proud of, the lighting and the composition of the frame are really bad in my opinion, but I wanted to keep it simple leaving the camera in the luggage. I wanted the viewer to hear the zip open and make them ask themselves what was happening, until the light shines in and it is clear to see that the point of view was set inside the luggage which then would be shut again, leaving the spectator in the dark. Sadly, as stated before, I am not satisfied with the result and I hope to use a similar scene in a future project when I will be able to improve on what I have done before.
The second video I will analyse is the second shooting of the group exercise where we were given a script which we had to follow. The first time around we had too many shots for each scene, so the second time we tried to reduce the number of shots and make the hole thing shorter and more fluid. On our second shoot we also tried to experiment with different techniques, for example on the staircase shot were we wanted to show the all process of going down the stairs in one single take. The edit I made for this video is quite simplistic and I decided to add a music in the background to add retheme to the cuts.

Small Things is a studio that captured my interest as soon as I read its description back when we had to select our preference for this semester. The idea of being able to learn how to create a piece of media by having to face limitations such as time and length restrictions was a challenge I wanted to face since I am interested in a carrier where I will be able to produce videos for advertising. So, thanks to this class I hope to learn and become more skilled in fields such as directing, editing and working in a group with all kinds of people.
Class after class we are learning more and more useful things to do with all sorts of things, like operating different kinds of cameras, useful editing tricks and team work. These are all important things we will need to know if we intend to have a professional career in this field. My hopes for this studio are to be able to learn even more useful things and be able to be competent in production and shooting to improve my work further in the future. For now, all my inspirations have been met and I am curious to see what future assignments will require us to do and with whom I will have to work with.
I’m looking forward to the next exercises and classes to see if my hopes will be met and to learn even more useful things and to put in to practice the things I already had the chance to learn, as well as having the chance to work with different people this time around, to have new insights on other ways of working and cooperating.
