Entangled Media- Group Assignment Reflection
Entangled Media Group Assignment Reflection
For this group assignment our group decided to create a web page to look like an abstract map using wires and other designs and materials to give this impression.
The map is intended to represent a fictional city which embodies different landmarks from a multitude of cities for instance, the Singaporean Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the streets of Osaka in Japan and so on.
With this media piece we were trying to make an interactive web page showing in an abstract way how city life, light and movement entangle together to create what is now become our daily life, made of all the wonders and technology we can experience every time we interact with the world, which can be good, bad and messy, as Elizabeth Wilson (1991, pp. 5) say: it was just those things that were shoddy and awful about city life that constituted its seduction, its particular beauty. The map was realised to make so it looked like a scrapbook intended to give a sense of movement to whoever engages with the piece. This was achieved thanks to the design of the cables and the video integrated which shows predominantly subjects in movement and related to the concept of light.
Regarding the ways of engaging with the project, we tried to make it very intuitive and easy to understand, we used written text like a poem for instance, and various images to give the user a place to start but we also wanted for the user to be guided not only by us telling him or her what to do, but also to be driven by curiosity. Going through the page and interacting with it, it is possible to find different kind of medias which entangle together and play or are reviled once they are interacted with. We used audio files, photos, videos and text made by each of the group members and all these elements of the assemblage work together.
While doing this assignment we learned how important it is to organise with your team and we also noticed how, even having a plan of what the project will become initially, it is really difficult to stay true to it, because idea change and evolve, most of the times in something better. So, we had to adapt these new ideas and renew some concepts to fit in the artwork, improving it in the process.
All the things learned and produced to make this project will surely prove themselves helpful in the future, especially how we learned to handle a more professional-like development process with all its changes of direction and unexpected events. Being our next assignment also a group project, I intend to use these skills earned to work better and more efficiently with my future group members to make a higher quality and more creative work easily.
In conclusion this project was challenging but also interesting to create and was fascinating being part of a group with always evolving ideas and creativity which helped overcome challenges we had to face.
