REFLECTION

Assignment 2- Entangled Media 2018

PINIZZOTTO Alessandro

The ‘thing’ I chose to reflect and entangle for this assignment was coffee, the same thing I used in my previous project. While the object might be the same, I decided to focus on a different aspect of coffee and how it has influences in our lives.

My intent was to show the importance of coffee and everyday usage of it, these factors can be for instance, just an excuse to meet and chat with a friend, or something that can help us when we need to be concentrated and focus on a task.

A lot of people consume coffee every day, in the US the average daily caffeine intake per capita is around 200 mg. This because most people are interested especially in its performance-enhancing effects. (Griffiths et al 1984)

The market for coffee brews has greatly increased in recent years. In some countries, such as Japan, they encountered enormous success due to the lack of a traditional image of coffee as a freshly brewed beverage (Anese and Nicoli, 2003)

In making my project I had the chance to critically analyse all the aspects of my work and try to find everything that does and that does not work. This was a useful exercise for me because it can prevent me from doing similar mistakes in the future assignments in a lot of different ways.

For starters, this time I decided to be more organised and plan carefully what my video would look like in the end, therefore I draw a storyboard and wrote a little script to help me shoot the videos which I used in the final result.

Originally my plans were to make a story which shows the way our lives are entangled, not only with coffee, but also with other people but this did not workout in the end. Due to time restriction and, in total honesty, a little bit of procrastination, I was not able to realize my vision. So, I opted to make a more abstract video showing how we use coffee everyday and the effects it has on some people. In a kind of way, I almost made an ad for Starbucks coffee since I used a lot of its logos, so I think this is the general vibe my video ended up having in the end and I am glad it came out this way. So, I used the information in the articles I researched to find

In the video I produced I used different media as requested from the assignment. I used audio recorded separately of a coffee machine as well as people chatting in the coffee store.  In addition, I used different video recordings and which I colour corrected edited to make some of the higher quality since they were mostly recorded with my phone.

One aspect of my video I did not like is the kind of shots I had the opportunity to shoot. I feel like I could have done much more with this project but just could not find a way to do so.

Hopefully I will be able to achieve more in the next project because I am willing to improve my editing skills as well as my planning.
