Reflection Assignment 1 – Entangled Media

In this practice project I wanted to show how things are bought and used everyday without much consideration of it, more specifically as I mentioned in the ‘development’ post, about coffee and its various effects.

In the video made by me for this assignment I simply show how coffee is bought and consumed usually with a friend or a co-worker before starting to work or going to class. Here I used multiple kinds of media, as requested for the assignment. I used both video and separately recorded audio as well as some text. Obviously, this project is not finalised as of right now and lacks the meanings I intended to reflect in it, I used just some of the ideas I have in mind and I am struggling a bit to make them in something concrete.

The things that might work well in the final project are some shots I used, for instance the shot where I pick up the coffee and go to the table, as well as the part where I am engaged in a nonaudible conversation with the person in front of me.

I feel like I did not gather enough shots and material in general as I wanted to, so I found it difficult to realized what I had planned. Therefore, for the next project I intend to storyboard and to write a little script to plan the production, plus I am definitely going to shoot more and more videos to use in this project, so I can have a multitude of media pieces I can work with.

Development Assignment 1 – Entangled Media

Entanglement, as explained by Tim Ingold is everything that connect the characters of a story with the world they live in and all the other elements present in it. For Ingold, the being inside a story don’t only move to one point to another like a line, without interacting with the other elements, but instead multiple pathways are built in the environment which surrounds the ‘organism’. This environment where the relationships between the story characters and world develop cannot be set free, but it must be contained so that it can be more easily controlled.

The tangle created by this method can be considered the texture of the world which being inhabit and make it grow and like Ingold says, as an ‘ever-evolving weave’.

For me, entanglement is as was written by Tim Ingold, but also it has to do with the creation of cause and effect events. I think the worlds that we create in stories are not so different from our real life, all the things here as in there, have a cause and a sequent effect which creates not only an entanglement, but also a chain of other events which then entangle with everything else.

Things we use everyday influence the world around us and create various entanglements and get entangled in other things every day.  The thing I decided to use for this assignment is coffee.

Coffee is something quite common in almost everyone’s life and even if we might not realise it, it plays a big part in the mood with which we live our daily routines. For some people coffee may be necessary to be more productive for university or work, for others it might be a way to relax and unplug for a few moments. This unquestionably influences our ‘story’ and can lead to different outcomes during the day.  Coffee does not only affect our personal life, but also the world we live in and the people around us. For instance, the cup of coffee in which you drank might not be safe for the environment if not disposed correctly, and so it can lead to major or small problems in it. Or maybe the action of you just standing in the queue before someone else, could lead to him or her being late for an appointment, which could have not happened if you were not there.

The stories each one of us live can be considered the organism Tim Ingold talks about in his essay, and the world we inhabit can be considered the environment that surrounds us.
