Get out. Get out.
Get Out.

Get Out’, the critically acclaimed film by Jordan Peele’ was a film I had the absolute pleasure of watching this week. Its underlying commentary on the struggle of African American people in America (and black people throughout history, globally) was what made this film so appealing to me, its ability to not only be a horror film, a film built for entertainment, but to have this ability to get a message across through a different medium (a medium where people ‘want’ to pay attention) is what I honestly found so captivating when watching it. This of course was lost on a few of the people I saw it with as they echoed ‘that wasn’t even scary, and it was so predictable’ (apologies in advance for how snobbish this sounds).

I really want to go into the depth of this film, but am fully aware that this has only just been released and I really do not want to spoil it for anyone reading at the moment. I will say this though- the scariest part of the film isn’t that someone crazy in a house is coming after you, the scariest part is how real the knowledge is that walking home alone at night as a black person (to relate it to myself, as a woman) could have you killed for no apparent reason. The scariest part is the laced threats of reality sewn into this film.
