This week’s lectorial was centred around fandoms and the power the audience has over the media that is consumed.
I found this lecture especially interesting when talking about fandoms, just being able to personally relate a lot of what was being said to the ‘Tumblr’ community. As someone who grew up among friends who adored Harry Potter (myself only every having watched the movies), I was exposed to a lot of fanfiction and saw how the consumers of these books such pleasure in the tiny, discreet details of these pieces of literature and centred whole short stories around them; all to further this imaginary world.
This shift in the way our society consumes media is so unique to our day and age- with the bullet theory being shoved aside and something more akin to uses and gratification taking over. The way the consumer is shaping the market and forcing big business to adapt really goes to show how the use of uniting technology has had such an impact.
