Film 3: Part 9 [11 September]

In today’s class we each presented and explained our project ideas and concepts for the remainder of this semester. I was the first person to present so I wasn’t completely sure what to expect from the pitch session however I think I articulated my ideas well and the feedback given by Paul, Robin & Dan was really helpful.

I’ve decided to further explore my idea to ‘document’ the night – through a series of exercises and experiments that primarily feature locations during the early hours of the morning. Paul suggested trying to construct everyday sights and sounds in new ways – showing familiar visuals in a different manner/light. I think this would be a good way to give my explorations a theme and perhaps some momentum; by looking into how the familiar can be made unfamiliar through a combination of time, lighting, sound, composition & editing.

Listening to the ideas of other’s in the class was also quite inspirational and it was interesting to see a lot of reoccurring themes, ideas and interests. It seems that while everyone plans to create quite unique products, a lot of the technical ideas and desires that we have are shared. I think this’ll make collaboration a beneficial process and I hope I get the chance to team up with a few people to create a variety of media items.

Over the next few weeks I’ve got a lot of filming to do and I hope to be able to test out a variety of techniques and ideas. Hopefully starting out with an open mind will allow me to eventually focus in on a few ideas to pursue (either later in the semester OR in the ‘post-film3’ future).
