Work in Progress

Now that we’re well and truly into this last assignment, I’ll just leave a quick update here on how we’re going.

So, I’m in a group with Cody Nelson, and Jeremy Costa (but we call him Bryan), and our aim is to make a satirical 80s styled talk show in celebration of 80s culture. In doing this, we’re going to distort the shit out of it. Visual glitches, bad filters, you name it.

We’ve split the show up into a few different segments, which are divided by a series of commercial breaks. Our segments consist of a talk show, a game show, and a cooking show if we can fit it in. Throughout the whole thing, we’ve also chucked in a couple of cultural references here and there, both modern and retro, and we’ve also discussed some of the differences between 80s culture and modern culture as well. (We’ve also kind of ridiculously exaggerated 80s culture as well).

In our script, I’ve noticed that a lot of the discussion is in the commercials, whereas the actual game show segments are more for the aesthetic and comedy. For example, Bryan’s commercial that he wrote tells the story of a person who travels back in time to the 80s to spread the word of Facebook, and how it has affected the modern world.

So far, we’ve just started filming. We were lucky enough to get access to one of the TV studios in Building 5 which we used as our set. We also decided to film on DSLRs, because we had access to heaps of them, which gave us the ability to record live. It should hopefully make things easier in post-production. In the first segment, we wanted to mimic the standard 80s talk show cinematography, drawing inspiration from The David Letterman Show, and Oprah. We used the basic three-point camera setup for the first segment of the show, with a profile shot on each of the two subjects. The second segment is meant to mimic shows such as Sale of the Century. (We didn’t have a wheel, so I’m just going to have to shitly animate it). Since this segment only had one subject, we only had to use the one camera, which we set up in a similar way to Whose Line is it Anyway.

Overall, we seem to be on track with everything. There are a couple of things I will have to spend a bit of time on in post production, but I should be good.
