Week 5 Reading 2

I think I got my readings mixed up. Although the title of this is ‘Week 5 Reading 2’, this is indeed about Reading 1 (I have already written about Reading 2). But anyway, I’ll keep this one short and sweet, as we pretty much discussed all there is to discuss about this reading in our Lectorial.

Textual Analysis! This weeks reading is an article called A Beginner’s Guide to Textual Analysis. It is an excerpt from Alan McKee’s Metro Magazine, it is about, you guessed it, textual analysis.

So, what exactly is textual analysis? I’m glad you asked, fellow reader, because according to McKee, textual analysis is “an educated guess at some of the most likely interpretations that might be made of that text” (Alan McKee, A Beginner’s Guide to Textual Analysis, Metro Magazine, 2001). What I find awesome about textual analysis is the fact that there can be heaps and heaps of different interpretations from many different people. It’s kind of refreshing to see things from different perspectives to yours. This is important because no matter how much we try to not be, to some extent, we will always be close minded (and that is probably such a close minded statement). There will be things others have seen in a text that you haven’t, and vice versa, even if that thing is so far fetched, like “the dominance of the colour blue represents loyalty and trust”.
