AMBIVALENCE By Zigang Mei

introduction: my work Ambivalence is a short video base on the character “Soryu Asuka Langley” from the anime “Neon genesis evangelion”. throughout my work, I wants to challenge myself how much I can interpret the knowledge I learn from this studio and used to produce something I loved. as our studio is much about camera coverage and decoupage which is about how image being frame are arrange to helps the convey the story. in my opinion, our study was started from how single shot could express to the story till multiple shot and that how i wants to tell the story. in this case, I’ve choose to draw a 4 scene storyboard but focus on recreate two scene from the anime which are episode 9 “both of you, dance like you want to win” and episode 22 “Don’t be”. Ambivalence will be focus on the character Asuka but featuring character Shinji and Rei from the anime
scene 1 the beach encounter: within the anime, Shinji met Asuka on a ocean therefore i think it’s will be important to start my film on a beach. another reason why i decided to shoot this scene is because the first shot i done in this studio was a character introduction eye-level shot. in this case i just find it will be interesting to starts my production with a character introduction shot too. similar to my first shot film in this semester, the main character wasn’t frame in shot to creates suspense. with camera panning, my protagonist Asuka was introduced and presents to the audience. but unlike my first shot using a eye-level shot, I utlize a low angle shot to shows her dominant power over shinji and her personality as pride person. during our production process, this scene was a quick wrap as luckily there wasn’t any person on the beach that day so we easily films everything i want. the only challenge i experienced was the wind causing my stabilizer less steady and leads there were some shaking in the wide-shot. because of that, adding some vfx was a bit difficult in post
scene 2 the long take time lapse: my second scene will be a recreation of episode 9 where a montage establishing shinji and asuka’s daily life living together. however in order to distinct myself with the anime and interpret my study in this course, I’ve decided to presented that plot by a long take montage instead of a montage edit by multiple shot within the anime. within my production process, I’ve creates a small tunnel that can’t seen from the camera for my talents. then i sets 4 staging 4 point where my talents will be performing and one editing point before each staging area. the long takes come out pretty fluent and convincing. however there are still serval issues. the first issues will be due to the fact that i was filming during sunset, the lighting and been changing within that long take will cause some scene looks more over exposed then other or even just uglier. another issues was that while i used a plain white blanket as a editing point, my shadow was reflecting on the blanket so the viewer can actually see me moving within that shot due to my reflection.
scene 3 conversation: my third scene will a conversation scene between Asuka, shinji and Rei. within this scene i wants to experiment with crossing 180 degree line as i never done that during my exercise in this semester. in order to do that film this scene, I’ve staged the 3 characters standing in a triangle with Asuka facing other two. i arrange a wide shot of 3 characters, one close shot for both shinji and Rei, one over the shoulder shot from Asuka’s back to shinji, finally a cross the line shot of Asuka standing between shinji and Rei facing the camera. within my production, due to the fact that I was using a color light. there was some continuity problems causing by the color couldn’t match with the rest of the shot which is pretty ashamed as i lost some great acting.
scene 4 the inner monologue: within the anime, this was a one person monologue scene with other character’s image cutting in. therefore instead of a Asuka’s monologue, I decided to plot those Asuka yelling those line from the anime to shinji with my knowledge of decoupage to see how dramatic i can achieved. overall, there wasn’t any challenge i encounter for this specific scene.
