Looking at my project which was based on using focus pulling and replicating a focus-pulling scene from “Quantum of Solace,” I aimed to look into the idea of focus used in the film. This scene, where James Bond shifts his attention from his surroundings to a broken wine glass, highlights the use of focus pulling to move the audience’s attention. By recreating this scene, my goal was to engage the audience with a clear visual narrative that highlights the impact of moving focus in storytelling.
One of the key concerns of this class is understanding and utilizing cinematic techniques to enhance storytelling. Focus pulling, as demonstrated in the chosen scene, is a tool that cinematographers use to guide viewers’ attention and reveal key things in a shot. In this project, I hope to show how focus pulling can be more than a technical skill—it can be good for the narrative helping the viewer’s experience and understanding of a scene. By focusing first on Bond and then on the broken glass, the audience is informed of its importance in the scene, suggesting danger, and creating tension and curiosity.
