The title of my piece is “The Point of Perspective” as it is shot entirely within a point of view shot. The scene follows the “protagonist” as they are awoken by two characters who are trying to work on an upcoming uni assignment. However as an argument between the two characters begins, the protagonist gets up to get some water before sitting back down to take a sip.
The process of creating this was quite unique as I needed to ensure I used a camera that was light enough to be moved around as the protagonist gets up and moves around the scene. So I decided to use my own Canon R50 as it’s small and easy to use. I also borrowed a rode shotgun microphone from RMIT, that I could attach to the top of the camera as I wanted the audio to be directional and focused as the audience should hear it from a specific angle during certain parts such as when the protagonist is facing away fro the other two arguing. I originally conceived the idea to include multiple different shots but thanks to the incredible performances of the actors, I was able to shoot it entirely within one take.
As well as my two main actors, Addison and Lachie, I also had Rosie as the protagonists hands as I wanted to stick to just directed and camera operation.
Overall, what I personally got out of this assignment was a unique camera operating experience, as I had to ensure the camera was steady but still had the light shake of a persons head in order to maintain the illusion of the concept of point of view, and of course ensure the audience could clearly see everything that was being presented on screen. I also got to work with some incredible individuals who followed my instructions while keeping the filming environment positive and enjoyable.
