One Coffee.

By Eva Massey

My above work, ‘One Coffee,’ is a reinterpretation of a scene from Promising Young Women (2020). The idea came from the stark difference between the scenes we were shown in class and the popular cinema I consume at home. Throughout the semester, I found myself questioning why films coming out of Hollywood weren’t taking advantage of the opportunities creative coverage can provide. I hypothesised that this could be due to the extra time and cost, or the emphasis that has been increasingly placed on the real over the art of decoupage. I would encourage the viewer to watch the original scene here and compare it to the two versions I created. Ask why making different choices affect your consumption of the scene. Does changing the frame by which you see the drama change your impression? Through this exercise, I learned the difficulties that present themselves by filming in this nature and felt inspired to seek out more cinema that recognises the power of coverage.
