My video work represents a redevelopment of my understanding of documentary filmmaking. Previously, I created two short documentaries that primarily consisted of interviews and B-roll footage. While effective, this style felt somewhat monotonous and did not align well with the innovative approaches emphasized in this course. Therefore, I modified my previous format to create a more dynamic and engaging piece.

In this project, I featured Austin, who showcased his extensive collection of Japanese anime figures and introduced us to Japanese anime culture. Instead of the traditional interview style, I employed a one-shot approach, continuously moving the camera between the interviewer, the interviewee, and the anime figures. This technique added a layer of immediacy and intimacy to the documentary, capturing the spontaneity and authenticity of Austin’s presentation. Given that it was an interview and Austin was not an actor, I only had one opportunity to film the interview, making it crucial to get everything right in a single take.

Reflecting on my work, I hope it engages the audience by providing an immersive and authentic experience. The one-shot technique was deliberately chosen to create a sense of presence and involvement, allowing viewers to feel like they were part of the conversation. This approach aligns with the key concern of my vision: to push the boundaries of traditional documentary formats and explore new ways of storytelling. By presenting the subject matter more fluidly and dynamically, I aimed to capture the essence of Austin’s passion for Japanese anime culture, making it accessible and engaging for the audience.

One of the primary goals was to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese anime culture. Austin’s extensive collection of anime figures serves as a tangible entry point into this world, and his insights offer a personal and relatable perspective. Focusing on a niche but vibrant subculture, the documentary seeks to broaden the audience’s horizons and challenge preconceived notions about anime enthusiasts. The one-shot format’s immediacy helps convey Austin’s genuine enthusiasm and dedication to his hobby, making it a compelling and engaging viewing experience.
