‘She Waits’ by Victoria So explores the realistic culture of ghosting in modern young love dating lives. Accompanied with Wes Anderson vintage-inspired aesthetic to convey a failed dating story of a young girl. With simple dialogues and cuts, aiming to bring up the complex emotion behind a common yet unspoken daily life experience.
This project reinforces the importance of eyeline while incorporating the Wes Anderson aesthetic. The idea is to take the basic dramatic situation of the “theatre scene” from Class Exercise 10, and remake that piece in my own way.
I created a detailed storyboard to clarify any confusing filming dilemmas on the day of the shooting. Rewrote the script, by giving a backstory to the characters, the acting process has become easier for the actors as they know the motivations and emotions behind the role that they are playing as well as conveying the story in a more effective way for our audiences.
I then proceed to create floorplan of where I imagine the various camera positions in relation to my characters; and by doing so, it guides me to agree with those positions, exaggerating the direction my characters’ eyes are cast in each frame. The next step is to extrapolate a shot list to carefully list out the filming process and clarify any camera framing.
I am fortunate to have secured the talents of Jessica and Tithini as my main actors, Raia as my sound person and to undertake the roles of both camera person and director.
On the filming day, we had to changed up most of the camera positioning as the venue is no longer the same. The original stairs that I wished to include is no longer a viable option to achieve extreme symmetry as the cinema is somewhat smaller than the theatre which is the location I preferred and planned a round. I managed to set up the camera on the side which gives off a brand-new scene. It worked out great.
I encountered a minor hiccup when transferring data from the SxS card to my mac, as I have never done that before, with Robin’s help, I successfully transferred all raw footage to final cut pro which I then carry out after production. I colour graded all scenes as I planned, Wes Anderson orange palette to accentuate the vintage nostalgia vibes and it worked in harmony with vintage inspired jazz. This is the same energy that I envisioned during the decoupage process. Overall, I am extremely pleased that most things went smoothly and despite small hiccups on the road, we pulled through as an all-girls team!!
