Throughout this semester, I have worked on a few different jobs, yet the one that I felt was most important to me was the festival program (figure 1). These programs started around week eight and finished on the festival day. They contained information such as the studio projects, schedule, sponsor pages and our team. Our previous poster designs and our style guide heavily informed the design of the booklets and pamphlets.
While the booklet design was most definitely a team job, through the collaboration of ideas and edits made by everyone, the pamphlets were a job that I took pride in. As Bob Ross would say, the pamphlets came to be as a “happy little accident”. Due to miscommunication and an ethical printing dilemma, I had to reformat the pamphlets the day before the event. As our booklet was 52 pages, printing 250 copies for our guests was unviable due to the required paper and resources. Therefore, I had to devise a solution a day before the event as to how we could still include most of our information but in a different format.
One of the pamphlets we looked at earlier in the semester was from the Melbourne Cinematheque. This pamphlet was an a1 size but folded into a condensed booklet. I took inspiration from this and created an A3-sized pamphlet with six folded sections. This pamphlet was much more practical and manageable for guests as it only had the required information for opening night. Giving the guests the option of a smaller pamphlet and booklet was great as it still included all the student works yet allowed all 250 guests to get a copy of the opening night details.
I have always enjoyed designing and working on little projects, but it was exciting to see something I contributed to being made in mass and passed around amongst many happy and well-informed guests.
