Narrative: Quarry in the Woods
What happens when hunters become hunted? This horror short explores just that. Combining my two favourite sub-genres of horror – ‘campy’ horror and found footage horror – I have created a piece that reflects the media I enjoyed growing up. Though these categories have vastly different aesthetics, I have utilised camera to transition between the two, redefining the genres in the absence of a cut. I had so much fun on set and in post trying to replicate a monster POV, but pacing is definitely something I need to improve on for my next horror shoot!
Documentary: Legacy
83 year old Anne, a retired operating theater nurse reflects on her time in scrubs. This piece is close to my heart, as it is my grandmother’s story. In creating this documentary, I wanted to capture her legacy for the rest of my family, as well as encapsulate her storytelling abilities. I found it easy for her to tell her story, since she has always randomly recalled moments in her life, going on monologues about her experiences. The time restrictions made it hard to cut back her story, but I feel the small glimpse I have presented will resonate with some people.
Commercial: Wonder Glass
Introducing the new and improved Wonder Glass range! Now with added iron oxide and uranium! This satirical take on a 1940s commercial revisits old-fashioned selling tactics (without the health disclaimers). I LOVE highly stylised period pieces, and it was an absolute delight trying to make this piece as reminiscent of the 1940s as I could. Doing this was equally as uncomfortable, as commercials from that era are cut in a way that feels unsettling compared to the modern day – a feeling I capitalised on for this short. Note: No one was exposed to uranium during the creation of this edit, just very convincing glow in the dark paint!
