Over the course of the semester I feel I have been able to get out of this studio what I had hoped – I’ve learnt lots of tips and tricks, ranging from actual editing techniques such as colour grading and clip stabilisation through to smaller changes in how I edit, such as learning a range of new keyboard shortcuts and in some cases, different ways to achieve the same thing (i.e. using the ‘Audio Gain’ menu versus using the level adjuster on a track). Something I’ve also learnt a lot about that I did not initially consider is stylistic choices, including how pacing cuts can convey different meanings. I was also very happy to learn about the way these stylistic choices impact your genre of content, such as how to effectively create an informative documentary or a scary horror. Overall, I feel I can finish this studio with more knowledge and more experience not just in editing but in my ability to use equipment as well, as I have been able to get a lot of hands-on experience shooting footage with the professional Sony FX3 cameras and other gear such as boom mics and Zoom recorders, which I’ve always wanted to get the opportunity to use.
