From this studio I have gained a deeper insight into the editing process, and I have developed more confidence in my editing skills and techniques. Through experimenting with different genres such as drama and documentary, I have gained a better understanding of the elements involved in creating certain atmospheres relevant to different genres including sound design, colour grading and music. By incorporating these aspects together in the editing process I feel I have a better understanding of how to edit in a way that both meets audience expectations and subverts them intentionally which are steps closer to establishing my own unique editing style and abilities.
MEDIOCRE: My narrative short film is a silent film about a pianist who feels that no matter how much they practice and how much effort they put into their art, nothing is good enough to be as good as they wish to be. It ends with a quote by Sylvia Plath to summarise the meaning behind it which inspired the story. It is a black-and-white film in a 4:3 aspect ratio and this project allowed me to experiment with these elements to tell a story without dialogue in only two minutes which was a challenging but creative task and I feel I have elevated my editing skills through these factors to create this final video which I can include in my portfolio.
Mindful Creations: My documentary is about my sister Sara who is an artist specialising in celebrity portraits. The video follows the story of her art process and why she draws as a way of escaping her anxiety. Her previous artworks are featured in the video to showcase her talent in addition to B-roll. This video allowed me to craft a true story in a way that feels authentic and interesting through both the visuals along with the dialogue and background music and I was able to exercise my editing abilities to create a video that is hopefully inspiring to audiences.
Capture it, Remember it: My commercial video is based around a group of friends at a house party who are enjoying each other’s company and capturing the memory on Instax Polaroid cameras. It is a montage of clips of the friends having fun and exchanging polaroids to be able to remember the night. This video is the most fun and colourful of this series as it includes lots of colour and movement. I was able to incorporate a more creative editing style for this video including using transitions between videos and graphics for the end title slogan and brand. The process of editing was quicker than the others and relied on a fast-pace between clips and it helped me formulate a portfolio video for social media style editing.
