unreliable narrator

Unreliable Narrator encapsulates the dreamlike and sometimes uncomfortable feeling that is evoked when ‘K’ recalls memories of a friendship breakup through conversations and flashbacks. Aimed at confusing its audience, this short film inspects our judgements and emotions when experiencing grief at the end of any relationship. Overall, this short film addresses two key questions. Are our memories accurate? Or are we all unreliable narrators?

Shot within 3 hours, I knew that there would be a lot of dependence on editing to recreate the feeling of brain fog, dreaminess and discomfort. I also aimed to subvert the expectations of a linear storyline, often jumping between different moments in time, to a point that even I was unsure about the true order of events. I never aimed to tell a clear narrative. Instead, I wanted to focus and lean into a mood and try to express it visually.

From its initial conception to the final product, this short film has taught me a lot about what processes to prioritise when there are restrictions such as budget, time and not having enough crew members. I have very little experience with filming and editing, and especially when it comes to storytelling through a short film format. However, I knew what media had inspired me this year, and it made me feel very excited about this creative opportunity. I’m very happy that I pushed myself to make this short film regardless of my lack of experience. I would definitely like to revisit the concepts that I merely scratched the surface of in this short film once I have more experience in storytelling.

That being said, I hope I made at least one person uncomfortable whilst watching it.
