A series of edits created by Josh De Sa.
Narrative:
The first piece is a narrative depicting a Lego figure attempting to make its way to the desk and PlayStation. It is a mix of stop motion and live action filmmaking accompanied by dialogue, sound effects and music.
Documentary:
The second piece is a mockumentary of sorts depicting fictional character Robert J. Swiss describing how he supposedly came up with the idea of ‘sliced cheese’.
Commercial:
The final piece is a commercial edit for previous sliced cheese. It was created using stock footage accompanied by a voiceover and music to appeal to an audience.
Reflection:
When asked at the start of the semester what I wanted to get out of the studio, I had a pretty good idea about what I wanted. I said that I would like to improve my editing skills but also my knowledge and when and where to edit, not just the physical action of doing so. I had a decent amount of experience but purely from other classes in previous years, nothing outside of my studies.
I don’t think my views really shifted over the course of this semester as I completed just about everything that I set out to do. I knew that I wanted to make more detailed edits and I believe I’ve done that. I wanted to create a story and in my final project, my narrative piece and even my documentary piece did exactly that. I wanted blockbuster type editing, and I chose stop motion, something fast paced but of course, without the hundred-million-dollar budget…
Over this semester, I believe that I have learned how to always place the edit second to the story. I struggled with this in the past, but I know now when to let my footage breathe and run its course rather than chopping every little piece up. After completing my final pieces, I’m definitely satisfied with what I created and hopefully this is just the start of my editing journey.
