POWER OF CUT

Through looking back at the series of learning and practical experiences in the studio this semester,  the studio taught me  how to consciously construct a story with shots, utilize the tools within editing software to enhance efficiency and select the right materials… ETC. To simply say, This studio definitely exceeded my expectations.

It has completely transformed my perception of the editing process. Prior to joining the studio, I lacked confidence in my editing abilities. That was one of the reasons why I chose to participate in this workshop. Previously, a multitude of footage would play in my workspace, but I didn’t know where to make my cuts. I would question my final decisions, fearing that my approach wouldn’t meet my expectations and eventually becoming afraid of editing. However, as the studio comes to an end, I have gained the ability to clearly sense where a frame should pause, consciously using footage to evoke emotions or convey thoughts, and employing techniques for seamless transitions that go unnoticed by the audience. This is thanks to the foundation of theoretical knowledge and the systematic teaching of editing workflow. Now, I can confidently face any editing-related task. I understand that I can trust my intuition because no one knows every piece of footage better than an editor.

On the other side,In this studio, I discovered a lot of thinking ideas that I used to ignore when editing. In Fact,  I had already begun editing in the stage of prepping the materials. While browsing through the footage, I would know which moments I favoured, whether it was a particular shot or sound. Adding descriptions, shot sizes, and comments to these materials helped me organize my thoughts better and cleared obstacles in finding the “right path.” Additionally, when you diligently follow each step of the editing process taught in the studio, you realize that it is the shots that create each other in the final composition of the video, rather than me creating them. This is the power of editing that I had previously overlooked. Also,I believe that hidden in the cut between clips are the choices and courageous attempts of editors, and these are the most valuable gains that the studio has given me.
