About “Power of the Cut”

This is the second time I’ve run the Power of the Cut Media Studio and, in many ways, felt like the first time I’d run the course. Which in its own unique ways exciting, challenging, and tremendously rewarding.

I have been inspired and surprised by the work of the students this semester.

Their observations, discoveries and frustrations fed my deep curiousity about what we understand of the art of screen editing.

Throughout the semester we explored and investigated the history of screen editing, moving through a wide variety of styles of cutting, experimenting with genre, sound design and music. They shot, directed and interviewed one another, sharing pieces of their soul for the camera, from both in front and behind it. They told stories of others in their lives, shot and edited music videos, and brought even brought Lego and sandwhiches to life!

Their major project, being exhibited in these pages, is an Edit Series: 3x seperate works in 3x different editing styles (which we refer to as Narrative, Documentary and Commercial), each with a duration of 45-120 seconds, a show reel portfolio to demonstrate their skills as editors.

I am very proud of their work and I hope their are too. Enjoy watching!

The Power of the Cut Media Studio acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations as the Traditional Owners of the land on which RMIT University stands. We respectfully recognise Elders past, present and future. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
