Shrine –

Following an argument with her best friend on the eve of her 18th birthday, Natalie is terrorised by her teenage bedroom.

I was tasked with the role of cinematographer for this short film. This was the first short film production I had ever worked on, so my creative process in executing my role was fairly unclear for a lot of the production. I began by annotating the script – writing notes and ideas for specific shots and scenes, as well as creating a mood board in alignment with the directors vision for the visual style of the film. On the shooting days, I would experiment and set up shots (framing and lighting) while actors were practising their performance. I would then show the director, and if all was approved, we would begin filming.

The thing I learnt most from this production was the importance of communication and organisation you must have when working with a crew. On shooting day, to be able to efficiently communicate with crew to ensure you are always busy and understanding of the schedule ensures the set remains positive and that tasks are completed to a high standard.
