He Sucks
He Sucks Synopsis: Mary has found herself in a suffocating relationship with a vampire who is mentally and physically sucking the life out of her. Will she escape unscathed or become one herself?
The story symbolises the modern issue of young love and first relationships, the female experience of a toxic relationship under the thinly veiled disguise of love. I utilised the historical character of the vampire (Morally corrupt, life sucker, predatory) and adopted the classic aesthetics of German Expressionism (Shadows, Black and White, Super Close Ups) to reflect the imbalanced power dynamic between the couple and reveal the inner psyche of the protagonist. From drawing stick figures for my storyboard to experimenting with lights to make shadows to adding foley to the edit, I felt very involved in each creative process, my creative vision being both my strongest suite and an obstacle haha!
Being the director for my own script and working with my crew was such an amazing creative and learning experience. Not only did I learn technical skills regarding cameras, lighting, sound and editing, but I learnt how to better manage my workload and navigate a leadership role in future projects. I realise the importance of paying attention to the finer details and being secure enough in sharing the responsibilities with others, allowing for more collaborative work 🙂
