Spinning Stories: with Jo Chitty

This poetic piece provides a front-row seat into the field of DJ-ing and the EDM space, humanising the people behind the decks. Following the story of UK-born DJ Jo Chitty, the documentary uses personal insight to reveal the demands and skills required for the job and uncover what the attraction is really all about; with help from explosive visuals, beats and intricate technologies.
The documentary was conceptualised through our curiosity into the DJ sphere, and through our own connections with people in the industry, we thought it would be an accessible and exciting way to ‘explode’ an idea; not only sharing it with an audience but walking away with newfound knowledge ourselves. We went about it by organising times to shoot the interview and b-roll footage, allowing a sense of understanding into who our subject was and how she felt about the industry. This set the tone for our questions we would then ask and the topics we could then divulge with her.
After crafting and producing the piece, we as a group walked away with an insight into documentary making, something we’ve never really entered. It was challenging, yes, particularly due to our out-of-ordered approach of production, but hasn’t put us off from making a doco in the near future!
