Echo – Lu Galante, Emma Kennedy, and Liam Johnston, 30 May 2023
Who is really being watched?
Echo is an experimental film that aims to be a commentary on the voyeuristic nature of the digital world. Themes of surveillance and authenticity are pulled forth, and questions are meant to be asked about the true morality of filmmaking.
A slow-burn film filled with misdirection and curated perspective, Echo encourages audiences to consider their role in digital media’s enriched world. Subject vs audience conventions are displayed throughout, as it aims for audiences to question themselves and ask if they are the ones really being watched.
As a group, we tasked ourselves to create a film that derives such emotion from an audience and makes audiences question their surroundings. To try and achieve this, we had a singular focus throughout the entire film, with multiple perspectives, misdirection and slow reveals all honing in on this one focus.
Echo is a culmination of our thoughts and ideas as a group, and what we’ve learnt in the past weeks. Together, we have learnt, through the process of filmmaking, the effects of voyeurism and the digital world. As such, capturing and editing footage with purpose in mind allows us to visualise and understand these concepts.
