About Poetic Video

Real life is rich and multifaceted, it is constantly beginning and ending and in progress. If our lives are so complex, why must our media conform to the traditions of narrative, the simplicity of beginnings, middles, and ends?

In Poetic Video we have attempted to capture our world in a different way, by thinking of media making through the mode of listing. What will documentary, new media, and experimental film look like if they are thought of as a list rather than a story?

“A list of ‘things that quicken the heart’. Not a bad criterion I realize when I’m filming” – voice-over in Sunless (Chris Marker, 1983)

Throughout this semester we have written our own series of lists, and used these lists as starting points in our media-making process. Utilising experimental editing techniques, and new media technologies such as Korsakov we abandoned narrative for slow films, extreme close-ups, and stop motion. This website collates the result of this thought process, a series of experiments, a list with practical, personal, poetic, gathering, explosive, and infinite qualities.
