Episode 6. The Party People by Lucy Liu

After a long day reminiscing his past relationship and life before the lockdown, Esme lies in bed and begins reading to block out his busy thoughts. Struggling to get used to his life in isolation, Esme regularly takes his headache medicine to escape reality. In this scene, Esme experiences an episode of hallucination of voices from his ex-girlfriend and best friend. Not being able to cope with the impact on his mental state, he tries to find to distract himself from his surrounding to reject the horrors from his own mind.

The making of Episode 6 was inspired by Euphoria and the lighting that was strategically used to convey the character’s state of mind and circumstances. Thus, I decided to experiment with colour lighting by sticking gel sheets to LED panels. However, using coloured lighting also contributed to raising the difficulty in controlling the film’s continuity, and it was more difficult to piece it together during editing. Overall, I was able to learn from the experience and reflect upon the purpose of lighting a scene which I will definitely consider more for future projects.
