Art of Microbudget Assignment 5.2 Studio Reflection

The studio production that I am reflecting to are ‘Intelligence’ by Henry Keogh and ‘Reconciliation’ by Xinran Wang. I find that the features of ‘Intelligence’ are very interesting, especially using ‘cold blood and lifeless sounding of AI-generated voiceover are truly creative while remain cohesive with the overall topic of this short film. The story left with an open ending for audiences to further imagine and comprehend which are also notably creative. I think it will be very hard to create this kind of film with the minimal budget, but Henry did very well execute this short film and raises my nerves to the technology throughout the film without any special effect; by using voiceover to help interpret the story plot, the overall length of his short film is shortening which means he will spend less time and money during shooting stage. He did very well on the use of sound effect to provoke audiences’ emotion. Overall, Henry’s ‘Intelligence’ did very well in fitting with the key idea of the studio, he produced a very deep and intellectual thriller short film while keeping the minimalism elements in his work. ‘Reconciliation’ produced by Xinran Wang did the same thing. The drama genre film is a very suitable genre for microbudget film; however, it is also very difficult during the pre-production stage, especially to create an engaging story plot and the message of the film are very significant for this kind of films. And I think Xinran did very good job in creating a conflict between the protagonist and her mother which speaks a lot of struggles and words for international student; the misunderstanding with the family when they are not around you and loneliness are reflected throughout this short film. Xinran also did very good job in building up the emotion of the protagonist from frustrating to the final relief, the emotion build-up is very structured. She also applies some small tricks in saving budget of her short film, for example, she applies the natural lighting throughout her scenes which are very appropriate and reflecting the mood of the character. From a cloudy and lightless day at the start to a sunny day at the beach in the end. Therefore, I think Xinran produced a very good short film, which are clear and profound for audiences while remain the key ideas from the studio.

At the end of semester, I also attended to an event made by another studio, the Festival Experience studio. I think they also presented a very good event and exhibited what they have learned during the studio. The event took place on The Capitol theatre near Flinders Street. The process is very easy, and the ticket are fairly cheap, I went on the first day and all the members of the class are very nice and helpful. We watched two short and one horror film about Vampire. The selection of the film is also very good, because I am a huge fan of horror film. I had a very enjoyable night with my friends, and I highly recommend to come and experience this studio event. Two important features that explained why I recommend are listed below.

– First, the website that Festival Experience studio created is very clear and professional, there is link to all the social media that they created, and you can have more understanding about their event and what they are presenting. The list of all the options is clearly presented on the front page of the website, from Tickets info to Merchandise that they created on their own. It is very accessible for all students to come and enjoy some good movie with their family and friends.

-Secondly, the event process is very simple, you just need to bought the ticket for the day you want to go and present your QR code to the staff to check. There is a shop where you can buy some drinks and food, also there is a desk where you can buy some merchandise that students created, such as bookmark, post card and so on. The flyer with the film description on it are also very helpful for audiences.

The overall experience in attending this studio event are very good and I think they have achieved the key ideas of the Festival Experience studio.

COME TO THE CHAT…

TITLE: COME TO THE CHAT…

Have you heard about a urban tale called ‘Come to the chat’? Jordan and Aaron are two young man who are good friends with each other and they always catch up with each other on the online chat app. Everything changed when Aaron moves into his mother’s house. During the first night staying at the house, Aaron starts to get strange messages from Jordan, and the messages only have four words: COME TO THE CHAT…

Short summary:

‘COME TO THE CHAT’ is a slow-burnt styled horror film. The story begins with a made-up urban tale and curse that happens on the online chat. After recieved the mysterious messages from his best friend, Jordan; Aaron as the protagonist of the story experienced the extreme horror that happened in his first stay at his mother’s house.

The Process:

I have always dreamed to make a film on my own, from scripting to editing. Thus, it is not very hard to brainstorm the ideas, film genre and come up with the story plot. I decided to make a horror film, because I was very fascinated with a film called ‘Unfriended’ (2017). And I just really craved to make a horror film similar to this Internet-related film. During the shooting process, we had a lot of challenges along the journey, from the availability of my actors to the reshoot because of the frame sizes of my film. However, I managed to overcome those challenges and come up with this film within the minimal cost.

What I got out of:

Throughout the semester, I think my overall skills set have been strengthened. Especially my editing skills, at the start of the editing, I always has some problems using Premier Pro; things like adding sound track, color adjusting and so on. However, after attending few sessions and look up on the Internet, I feel much more easier coping with this app. I have also improved my management skills as well, because three of my actors’ time and experience are very limited, therefore, it is hard to arrange a time to shoot when they all free and directed them what to do. However, I am happy with what I have accompolished and learned in the course.
