Short film – Bad luck.

Bad luck. Is a short film centered on a character who denies the notion of ill fortune. Determined to demonstrate the absence of bad luck, they open an umbrella inside, an act traditionally associated with misfortune. As a result, their day takes a turn for the worse with a series of unlucky incidents. To reverse their fortunes, they resort to burning incense, leading to a stroke of good luck. However, despite experiencing positive outcomes, they remain steadfast in their disbelief of bad luck. In an ill-advised move to prove their point, they boldly walk under a ladder, unknowingly affirming the existence of unfortunate circumstances.

Process

The process of creating this micro-budget film involved careful planning, resourcefulness, and creativity to work within the constraints of a limited budget. My goal was to deliver a compelling story that challenges the concept of bad luck while making the most of the resources I had available.

What I got out of making this short film

While making this micro-budget short film, I learnt various important lessons and gained valuable experience.

Problem-solving: After completing the film assembly and presenting it to my class, I experienced dissatisfaction with the storyline’s inability to effectively showcase my filming and editing skills. Consequently, I made the decision to develop an entirely new concept, which entailed starting the process of bringing the film together from scratch once again – a situation that was less than ideal. However, upon doing so, I found myself significantly more pleased with the outcome, and my classmates shared the sentiment as well. The film garnered very positive feedback, which further reinforced the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction I felt.

Multi-tasking: During the production of my micro-budget film, I found that I was juggling various responsibilities. This taught me to handle different tasks simultaneously, as I was the film director, actor, and editor. Overall, this experience helped enhance my versatility and adaptivity as a content maker.

Persistence and Resilience: During the production phase of my film, an unforeseen setback arose when I unintentionally filmed in a vertical orientation instead of the intended horizontal format. This oversight posed a significant challenge as I had to undertake the arduous task of reshooting the entire piece, consuming a considerable amount of time. Nevertheless, despite the setback, perseverance prevailed, and ultimately, everything fell into place.
