Luister is formed around the site of my childhood garden. It explores the concept of listening and the link between sound and story (LaBelle, 2010). I aimed to encourage the viewer to experience a slippery memory through the stories sound hold. I inquired into personal histories and therefore memories I have of childhood, by asking how does one listen in an embodied manner to their past? How does truly listening to the intimate relationship I hold with my childhood garden reveal the slippery memories it holds? To create this work, I composed a soundscape that includes moments from archival footage in the form of home videos as well as on site recordings. I filmed a dancer behind various white fabrics to capture organic movement within the garden.
I have grown a lot as a media maker within the creation of this work. It gave me the opportunity to create a work that is more conceptual and expand my skills in working with sound as the focus.
