TO CHEAT OR NOT TO CHEAT – PATRICK NEIDECK

My project ‘To Cheat Or Not To Cheat’ experimented with the visual tool Depth of field, specifically how it can be used to achieve dramatic tension in a film. It was also chosen as a camera element that I wanted to improve my understanding of, theoretically and practically. This project provided a means to attempt this challenge, whilst allowing me to present a compelling scene for a one-page script I wrote. The scene follows two students walking down a hallway after class. One student states that they may flunk an upcoming trigonometry quiz, the other student hands them a cheat sheet before running off. The remaining student is left contemplating his actions before pocketing the cheat sheet and walking off. Using a storyboard design and two actors, classmates Jack and Madelyn, I was able to capture all of the required footage in a little over an hour of production. With only some errors appearing in the form of the lapel microphones and camera reflections, this production otherwise progressed quite smoothly. For the small scene that it is I am quite proud of the results, there may be some elements I would like to adjust if I attempted it again, yet I do believe it holds value to the effect I was originally trying to achieve.
