Popping K-pop

Radio Live Show

Our group – Jacob, Skye, Chloe and Ebonie – produced a radio show on Triple R for Room With a View. It includes 3 interviews roughly 10 minutes long, some fun and groovy music, as well as interesting discussions by our friendly hosts, Chloe and Ebonie. We had a chat with a primary school teacher, Pearl Best, on education during and after the COVID pandemic from a teacher’s view. Then we talked with Felicity O’Halloran about music education and the National Music Teacher Mentoring Program. And we talked about a program called ‘She’s a Crowd’ with its CEO, Zoë Condliffe, which was great to see how it tries to counteract violence with a safe space for people to share their stories.

This radio show was broadcast on Triple R FM on the 24th May 2022 with all the necessary copyright/music rights clearances. You can find the show on the Triple R website here: https://www.rrr.org.au/explore/programs/room-with-a-view/episodes/20571-room-with-a-view-24-may-2022

Radio Feature – Popping K-pop

We decided to dive into the world of K-pop dance crews in Melbourne because not many people know about it and we wanted to reveal more about the personal experiences of these dancers. So, we interviewed some of RMIT’s K-pop dance crew, M$TKN, including Eva and Rohan. Skye is a member of this crew and she narrates from her perspective. While we faced the challenge of doing this at the same time as our on-air show, this was a fun, light story that tries to make the listener feel like they’re there. Plus, the great music choices and sounds were mixed well for an upbeat, engaging experience.

Intro: Did you know that there are heaps of K-pop dance crews in Melbourne and they dance in the city streets, like Federation Square, roughly twice a day? They’re mainly university students and unfortunately their performances can be met with racist comments, but their passion for performance keeps them motivated. RMIT’s K-pop dance crew debuted this year and through the challenges for filming a live dance, they grow as people, express themselves – their passions and… Well, you’ll find out as Skye goes through the tough but rewarding experience with the dancers.

From these two experiences, we developed our skills including interviewing, audio editing and storytelling, and teamwork. It was great to discover how an actual radio show worked – from the panelling to producing to speaking, and trying to connect everything smoothly. For our feature, we really improved in smooth transitions for an engaging story that created imagery with audio and used music for tone and transitions. We also got great grabs that were linked with scripting. Overall, we learnt more about the affordances of audio for an experience that resonates with the audience.
