Esscents

‘Esscents’

A multi-faceted sensory experience that combines the uses of sight, sound and scent. Here, the connection between location and the human reaction are explored and lived, with immersion pushed to its greatest extent. Where the sky meets the shores, and the trees meet their roots, the sense of smell plays a crucial role in transporting you into each atmosphere.

A slight twist on the expression of place and space, this work aims to evoke the tranquil, soothing awareness of being completely washed over by remembrance.

So take a deep breath, and feel the ‘Esscents’.

‘Esscents’ is a fun and interactive work that incorporates the synchronisation of smell and on-screen visuals in order to evoke the illusion of the body being placed within that particular space. By focusing on 1-2 ‘fragmented’ locations each, each group member was able to create an atmosphere that transported the viewer into their creatively-built world. I was responsible for both the spa and beach sections, and I loved the contrast between the two in terms of perspective, sound, smell and essence. The generation of this media work allowed me to experiment with the effect of the olfactory sense that I had never had the opportunity to utilise until now. I learnt about the importance of building correlations between sound, space and vision, as humans are inherently searching for these connections constantly in everyday life.
