Earth to Amy – Amy Gillies

‘Earth to Amy’ seeks to reveal my identity through an exploration of connections between my past and present selves. The autobiographical work attempts to answer the question; how has my past influenced my current identity? Within it, I explore themes of memory, vulnerability, family and self in the pursuit of gaining insights into who I am.

The video work is a collage of the old and the new, incorporating a combination of digitised family footage, photos, music, sketches and recent or new footage. Despite ‘Earth to Amy’ not having a clear linear narrative, its primary focus and subject matter is archival family footage. This footage which I found in the form of cassette tapes has been digitised and been pivotal to the making of this work. It is organised into chapters that display the content of one of the original tapes and other mixed media which I have associated with this footage. The disjointed nature of ‘Earth to Amy’ aims to highlight the often ambiguous nature of identity.
