Unmade
‘Unmade’ follows a filmmaker who discovers a 1998 documentary about Robert Powell, a young man who left society in order to live in the bush, and decides to track him down.
Why do we associate truth with documentaries? What is the relationship between documentary filmmaking and other forms of storytelling? My aim for this semester was to use the core building blocks of documentary to discover how it actually works. I also wanted to bring the filmmaking process into the forefront and focus on myself as a filmmaker and storyteller. The process of making this film was a crash course in low budget guerilla filmmaking, and I would often be performing multiple production roles simultaneously. Through making this film I learnt about why I am so particular about the stories I want to tell, and why the documentary form makes me so uncomfortable.
