Our group worked to create a comedy news segment regarding lockdown issues in general, while also touching on many different issues currently circling in modern news, like former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian’s choices for opening up NSW, the vaccine rollout, Daniel Andrew’s handling of lockdowns, and anti-vaxer conspiracies. These topical issues are all conveyed to our audience in a comedic tone through our late-night-show style segment called “6 Reasons Why I Can’t Go To The Pub”.

Our group aimed to take inspiration from multiple different comedy news shows such as, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and Seth Myers’ segment A Closer Look. These shows/segments all depict the show’s host tackling topical news while implementing humour and well placed jokes to break up serious news stories. This gives viewers a chance to poke fun at authorities mishandling certain things, while also being educating for those wanting a deep analysis on news, without being too serious in tone. This is the exact function we wanted our final product to serve, as both an educating source to catch up on news, or get a deeper dive than commercial television news will do, while also being a source of comedy and fun for those wanting to also poke fun at current events.
