Vacancy – a film by Lucy

Vacancy is a short experimental film which follows a subtle narrative of a young woman who has found herself untethered from her physical body. She is unwillingly unhinged from the sublunary world and now has to navigate the spiritual world as an entity beyond tangible comprehension. Every piece of editing and construction of scene is intended to reflect a manifestation of her astral form, resembling a realm of Dionysian values – being unrestrained emotion, roaming spirits, uncovered memories, fractured mosaics of dreams & feelings, distortion & mismatch of senses, uncanny familiarity, sinister sensory stimulants and sublime moments of eternal nirvana.

The young woman’s mother searches for her in the sublunary (Apollonian) world, calling for her, but she has irreversibly transcended.

The process of creating Vacancy was an intricate one. Using my iPhone 7 Plus meant I had to rely on editing to enhance/mask video quality. The process of filming was significantly shorter than the process of editing, as most of the themes and ideas are communicated through the chaotic and revelrous editing.

From creating this work, I learnt a substantial amount of new skills in Premiere Pro, and about the media making process in general. I learnt how to deal with failed ideas, how to work across multiple programs and how to create and stick to a timeline schedule appropriately. I also felt a shift in personal perspective in terms of newfound feelings of universal unity and spiritual open mindedness. I hope viewers can experience the same.

Indulge and let it envelop you:
