Our group decided to use a more collaborative approach to completing our project rather than having clearly defined roles. I found there were both pros and cons to this.

I liked how whenever a decision needed to be made, it was always a discussion. This has been the case for me when I’ve worked in different groups in other studios, however I felt that this semester we were quite good at building on each others idea, rather than debating suggestions as one or the other. I also think this allowed us to produce our best work, as having everyone contribute their thoughts meant our ideas could be developed further than if we each just contribute separate ideas. Of course, this process only works when everyone put forward their ideas, which was sometimes was a problem, and I know I personally could have been better in that department.

Another difficulty I personally found with this approach was that because we didn’t always have clearly defined roles, I was never sure exactly what I should be doing on set. While I was always busy and found some way to be helping out, I can’t say exactly what creative contribution to each of the two projects were. If I were to try a similar approach again, perhaps I would suggest we each take a role but we all try to consult and listen to one another before finalising major creative decisions. However having said that, I still found that this semester has been possibly the best experience I’ve had working in a group in this course so far.

This week in class we all presented our work in class and gave one another feedback. Each group has been working on completely different projects, but they’re all looking really great. Some groups showed multiple versions of the same videos with different colour grading or audio. Mostly the feedback everyone got were small things that were easily changed, such as changing a voice over or cut a clip a little sooner.

After our group showed one another our edits last week, we decided to show one version of each video to the class. Neither had been colour graded yet, but I think it will look much better once it’s been graded. The class agreed that the zoom shot wasn’t really working, so we’re going to try to find another way to cut that scene together. Watching “Blue Moon” on a bigger screen, I did find that when Justine’s singing was out of sync with the song, it was much more noticeable and somewhat frustrating.

Otherwise, the class seemed to like what we have so far. They all got a sense of how just how incredible our location was, which is something that was really important us and we wanted the videos to communicate. They also liked the pace of each video and the style of our editing. All in all, I feel were on track to have two videos to present at the screening that we are happy with and can feel proud of.
