Conclusion

It is hoped that the information and analysis in the previous pages has provided a useful starting point in understanding where the Australian film industry sits in 2015, as well as the factors which will shape it over the coming years.

The introduction and proliferation of new technologies globally prompt rapid changes in the international film industry, as we have seen through the shift in distribution platforms over the past ten years.  Thus the quick adoption of new technologies makes it difficult to forecast changes well into the future.

Attaining theatrical distribution remains a formidable challenge for many Australian filmmakers – let alone competing with the might of studio-backed Hollywood blockbusters.  Despite this, Video on Demand platforms represent a genuine opportunity for low-budget Australian filmmakers to find an audience that may have once been out of reach, or at least harder to reach.  As practitioners, we’re still coming to terms with this technology and realising how to exploit its full potential.  It is expected that online digital distribution will continue to grow over the next few years.

While there is a considerable amount of data available on the revenue of Australian feature films, as well as some qualitative insights into the demographics of audiences across various platforms, there remains surprisingly little in the way of analysis which links together technological change to cultural/creative changes within the industry.  This has been one of the key challenges we encountered in our research, and this report has attempted to commence some of this analysis in order to understand the industry as a whole.

We hope that you have found some interest and enjoyment in the report.
